In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Club Shay Shay, Shannon Sharpe sits down with Grammy-nominated rapper, producer, actor, and cultural thought leader David Banner for a raw, vulnerable, and wide-ranging conversation. From his roots in Jackson, Mississippi, to his rise as a pioneer of Southern hip-hop and a visionary in media and activism, Banner opens up like never before.
From selling mixtapes at Kroger’s to producing hits for T.I., Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Maroon 5, and more, Banner recounts his rise in the music industry and the painful realization that fame isn’t what it seems.
He reflects on how hip-hop wasn’t just an escape, but an education and empowerment. Inspired by Brand Nubian and The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Banner stopped eating pork in the 8th grade and began a lifelong journey toward purpose and spiritual grounding. “Rap taught me something,” he says, recalling how music, and later, therapy, helped him confront childhood trauma, grief, and the weight of being a voice for the people.
Banner speaks candidly about battling depression, the heartbreak of the music industry, and the painful realization that fame is often a lie. “I loved music, and music broke my heart,” he admits. But instead of folding, he evolved. Now the CEO of Banner Vision, he’s produced campaigns for Gatorade, Disney, Marvel, and acting in films —playing a god in an upcoming superhero movie. His mission? Use his platform to rebuild what the industry won’t.
He opens up about his faith, his genius-level reading skills as a child, and how Samuel L. Jackson gave him life-changing acting lessons on the set of Black Snake Moan. He reflects on his HBCU experience at Southern University, corporate racism, tough conversations, politics, and even why he built his grandmother a house as the first thing he did with his music money.
From deep conversations with Erykah Badu and LL Cool J, to producing “Rubberband Man” and learning from Jay-Z, to giving insight on Nelly’s “Tip Drill” and the truth about how money is made in music, this episode is a masterclass in growth, purpose, and legacy.
He challenges peers to invest in their communities: “I invest in me. I put my money back into what I stand for.” He shares wisdom passed down from his father and lessons from losing friends to gang violence.
The conversation digs deep into spirituality, accountability, masculinity, and systemic racism in both America and corporate culture. Banner pulls no punches: “Hollywood is no different from America. The police just took the hoods off.” He urges honesty in our communities and calls for an end to performative shock when abusers or injustices come to light.
In one of the most moving moments, Banner opens up about being tired, not just physically, but emotionally, from pouring so much into Black culture.
He honors his hero, Ice Cube, and praises Ryan Coogler and the movie Sinners for reconnecting African Americans with lost spirituality, and celebrates Shannon Sharpe for defying the odds and doing it his way.
As the episode closes, Banner leaves us with this charge: “Just shoot it. Keep clicking, keep believing. God conspires with those who believe.” Whether he’s talking to LL Cool J, scoring for T.I., or building legacy from the South to the screen, David Banner is proof that faith, fight, and freedom are the true measures of success.
This is an episode that you don’t want to miss!

David stfu nobody treating him no way jealous leave it alone
Club Shay shay fans are so kind and have so much grace.
We need a Pharrell interview next Unc!!!
I feel like David Banner is getting close to breaking the wall to some deep trauma (self-esteem & insecurities included). He's the epitome of false confidence. He's talented beyound words, but he has that Bronze medal jaded-ness. You're thee 3rd best athlete in the entire world, yet he will beat on his chest and stomp on the podium to tell you how outstanding his essay was in sociology class.
Brother, we see you. Soon, you will boost from the mountainside of real essence and clarity. Only you will stop you. Put the drink down
Shannon Sharpe made his bed, not to mention he was warned by Kat
gg
Thanks!
Much Respect to David Banner❤

I think what most folks problem is with regarding Shannon that they cannot subtract their emotion from his personal situation that he’s going through. And they do not know how to blindly support someone who they feel has done something wrong. Our jobs as human beings is not to judge, but because we are imperfect, that is our default setting to be judgmental so with that it clouds our ability to support one another, especially in difficult situations. We can support Shannon and hold him accountable at the same time and we’re not doing that.
The most powerful interview ever. While he was saying all this stuff my mind was just like wow this is true what is going on in the world. I always Try to give back or help when I can. I want everyone to succeed.
Counted to 1M….nahhhh bro
This interview deserves over a million views ❤

Everyone!! We may get another member in the Council of Wholesomeness! ( The other members are Mr. Rogers, Levar Burton, Steve Irwin, and Bob Ross). If there are others, let me know.
David is the total package.. 💚🖤❤️
Sooo many gems dropped!! I totally feel him on that country life. When I was a kid I hated going to my Grandma's house in the country on the weekends. There wasn't a neighbor for miles and in every direction all u could see was rows and rows of corn. I sooo hated it but now that I'm grown grown I'd love to have that property! SMDH
If David Banner had a Billy he would be Founder John Hope Bryant.
❤❤😎😎
This one of the most underrated interviews ever! Banner drop so much game they keep it out the algorithm!!! 💯
❤
I wish they could go another 2 hours… 🔥
I love Danner Banner. Since a little girl seeing him on tv with his music, who he is, I've always been inspired. ❤
Always on time…GOD IS💯💜💜💜
David Lord How Mercy you are the creation God made no mistake making…
Thank you Shannon for continuing to put one foot in front of the other
That word his mentor gave him is exactly what i live by. I often dont get the energy i give out to make people's life easier even to just make them smile and give them encouragement but i know when im gone everything that i gave will still be here and live on for generations. So i dont care and dont live for what others give me. It's something waiting for all of us on the other side. If we do a good job here and put all into our days, seeds, and strangers we would have done good.
Virginia is the east coast
Have mercy lawd!
"keep playing Jesus and wonder why you end up on a cross" that is insane to think, but answered something for me thank you @DavidBanner
